The white grape viognier is sometimes blended with the red syrah in the northern Rhône, and the practice has become fashionable elsewhere. Surprisingly, it contributes to the deep colour of the wine as well as its perfume. Douglas Green was one of South Africa’s first ‘négociants’ back in the early 20th century. They have a team of expert viticulturists who have worked hard to forge long-standing relationships with their appointed growers, which span from the cool coastal mountains in the west to the sunny Breede River Valley. A deeply coloured smooth-textured South African red with berry and spice flavours, in a very easy-drinking style.
